In this chapter, Luling is already in Hong Kong. She was all alone and she wanted to go to america badly. After a month in Hong Kong, she received a letter from Gaoling. She said that she could not sponser Luling to go to america. so she could either apply as a refugee, wait for Gaoling to be a citizen or marry a citizen so she could become a citizen and sponser Luling. Luling felt angry because she felt her wait in hong kong was pointless.
deperate, Luling decided to see how much the oracle bone she had was worth, she went to three shops, one offered her enough for a second class ticket, the other other her enough for a first class ticket, the last thought she was a thief.
She moved to a cheaper and smaller home soon, in order to save money. after working for awhile, she had enough money to afford the cheapest ticket but she realized the price of money had gone down and the ticket price had gone up, again she couldnt buy the ticket.
She then bought herself an outfit that looked like a majie, a maid that the british people liked to hire and she got herself a job. Then she went on to describe the people she worked for, the Flowers. She stayed in Hong lkong for the next two years, hoping to get away to america, but the prices kept going up.
then she received a letter from gaoling that she met two bachelors and she wanted to marry one of them.
then Fu nan appeared and threatened to ruin ther chances of going to america, by reporting on them. Then he kept asking Luling for money but one day he was gone. Then Gaoling wrote, telling her of the things she needed to do before she went to america. Luling felt relieved. Fu nan had lsot one of his eyes when Luling next saw him and she gave him money to get him away from her. She sold the oracle bone and got a ticket to america. she went as a famous visiting artist.
