Luling was in agony, she was still tormented by Kaijing death, she really loved him. Gaoling, Miss grutoff and sister Yu tried to lighten her load by helping her think in a different light but it still didn't ease the pain. She went to Kaijing 's grave everyday and she told him about the family, and one day, she told him Miss Towler didnt wake up that morning.
The japanese soldiers made it to their orphanage and began shooting. They all thought that Cook and his wife who were lying on the ground, were dead, but luckily they werent. The Peking man's bones were missing, those were the work of Kaijing, Luling felt hollow, as if his work was for nothing.
Miss grutoff was later captured and Teacher Pan assigned the girls each an apostle, filled with money to help them if they needed to escape.3 months after Miss grutoff left, Teacher pan decided it was time to go. Luling was in charge of looking after 4 girls. They boarded the train and the girls had eye infection, though not serious, looked disgusting. Luling disguised herself with chicken blood and using porridge to make her skin looked wrinkled.
The disguise assisted them in esceping to Peking safely. They stayed there for the next few years and the girls got married while Luling and Gaoling worked for chang at the ink studio. The war ended in 1945.
Then Miss Grutoff returned, very sick.also, everything from the old school was destroyed. Miss grutoff had to return to america but she needed someone to accompany her, Gaoling went with her.She promised to get Luling there too.
Before the two left, they toasted each other and they agreed for their reunion, they would dance, dance, dance.
character analysis:
Luling:
smart/street wise-She knew what to do in order to fool the Japanese soldiers so that they would leave her alone.
brave-
1)She accepted Kaijing's death and even though it hurt her, she moved on and still carried on with life, she didn't let her past hold her down even though he would still be in her memory.
2)She dared to bring the girls to Peking alone and although she was afraid initially, she knew she had a job to do so she did it bravely and smartly.
shy- though she wanted to go to america badly when Miss grutoff asked for a volunteer to go with her, she did not dare to voice out that she wanted to go, so Gaoling went instead.
Gaoling:
straight forward-She wanted to go to America so when Luling said Gaoling should go, she happily accepted it, not selfishly, but happily. She did not beat round the bush like Luling did, that's why Luling missed her chance, partly because of politeness partly because of beating about the bush.
themes:
war- how it affected their lives and what change it brought about [moving to Peking]
love-1) The love Luling lost, Kaijing.
2) the love between the characters and how they helped each other through the darkest hours.
Most memorable moment:
The most memorable moment in this chapter was when miss grutoff returned from the prisoner camps. Because to me, it signified the end of the war and also it signified hope. It was because of miss grutoff Gaoling got to go to America as well, to begin a new life.
