Summary
The chapter begins with Luling's hourney to the orphanage. Mr wei was lazy to go up the hill so she walked alone. She saw girls walking along the courtyards and when she stepped over the threhold, she saw Dead Bodies. She was reminded of something Precious Auntie used to say.
She met two american missionaries and no arrangements had been made for Luling. They asked her her name and she couldnt speak so she wrote it down. They began asking Luling questions, wondering whether she was literate.
then they accepted her in, half to be a student, half to be a teacher. She was introduced to the other teachers, missionaries and even scientists. Also she saw there were about 70 children. some with broekn limbs, one a cyclops and one a dwarf.
Luling acted as a big sister to a girl clled Little Ding. The girls put up performances, they had music and classrooms. In the schoo, they never worried about being kicked out and they were never hungry. Luling was the best caligraphy student at the school too.
Then she met Kai Jing, Teacher Pan's son. He had a limp because of an illness. this reminded Luling of P.A.
One day she realized there was a pocket on a piece of cloth she had and inside ws precious aunties picture before her face was ruined, the Luling cried.
When Miss grutoff went to collect mail and packages one day, Luling had a letter from Gaoling. It informed her about their current situation and how Gaoling wished she could run away too because she lived in a household of misery.
Before christmas, they had to disguise the statues of chinese gods with paint in case the japanese attacked so they used straw as beards and colorful paint. Luling had changed from the lonely girl, to the girl who was in love with KaiJing.
One day He and Luling wwre together and they were looking at a book. people wouldve thought they were talking about school but it was love.'we both knew we were speaking about the effortlessness with which one falls in love without intending to..' then they bent toward each other and kissed.
character analysis
Luling:
smart: she knew caligraphy and she knew how to read and write and she could even teach other girls. she was passing on P.A's knowledge
brave: she wasn;t afraid of starting a whole entire new life in a strange place with strangers. she seemed pretty comfortable and settled in fast.
optimistic: she never gave up hope on herself nor on life.she just accepted things they way they were and made the best of it
righteous: to her, if a rich man loses his house and a poor man lost his house it would be equally tragic because it didnt matter if you were rich or not.
emotional: when she read and re-read the pages that precious auntie wrote, she had to keep holding back her tears.maybe it was partially guilt she felt too.
