Summary
the chapter starts off the Luling saying' my fourteenth year, i became an evil person'
The chapter begins with a nasty rumour about the dragon bones being human parts and many people stopped buying them. one day Precious Auntie's father told her in a dream to return the dragon bones if not she would be cursed, so she rose early to return them. Luling wanted to sell them for a million ingots but Presiouc Auntie refused. she didn't want the family to be cursed.
Luling hated it when gaoling received more attention from Mother because she got to sleep in the k'ang with her and she sat with her during dinner. while Luling was always with Precious Auntie. As Luling grew older, she grew less compassionate about Precious auntie.
Luling tried seeking favour from Mother and she complained to Precious Auntie about Mother not loving her. Precious Auntie told her that her Mother cared for her if not she wouldnt critisize her.
Mother thought highly of Mr chang and when Precious auntie tried to tell them that the dragon bones her had were stolen from her, Luling refused to help Precious Auntie because mother didnt want to her about it.
Then when Granny died, Mr chang delivered her coffin and Luling thought he was a nice man. He began talking to her about dragon bones but Luling wouldnt tell mr chang where P.A had kept them.
Then one day they receieved an invitation for Luling to go to Peking for a marraige match. Precious Auntie wanted to go with Luling but there wasn;t enough place and luling felt she was old enough to go alone.
When she reached there, she was unprepared, she forgot to bring her comb and the clothes she brought were unsuitable. she felt alone without precious auntie.
But when she returned, she decided to marry her match and even though precious auntie forbode her to, she told her 'it's not for you to decide'
Character analysis
Luling:
stubborn- went against Precious Auntie's wishes and went to peking even though precious auntie told her again and again not to
naive- she tought that favour would get her mother to love her more than gaoling
spiteful-she liked making gaoling jealous because she had always been jealous about her because mother loved her more
Precious auntie:
sensitive- she knew she couldnt tell Luling the real reason why mother didnt love her so she mad up excuses for mother to ease lulings doubts and worries
not agressieve- if she really wanted luling to listen to her she should've made her point clear and straight to the point maybe then luling would realize what was happening.
themes
love- Previous auntie loved luling so she didnt want her to marry chang, it was all for her own good but when luling went against her wishes, which she had never done before, she was completely shatered.
deceit/lies- Luling did not know changs real identity and how he had changed her life before.
